On Your Doorstep

Walking in this area you are surrounded by various landscapes. The Whitesheet Hill Walk hosts some of the UK’s rarest chalk loving butterflies, or perhaps local Farmland Walks much enriched by the DEFRA margins and the promotion of the local farmers and The RSPB.

The Stourhead walks are simply magical and mystical, where the Iron Age past can be seen on the Park Hill Camp Walk.

On the walk to King Alfred’s Tower remember to leave a little energy to climb the 205 steps to the viewing platform at the top, where you can see the splendor of the Somerset Levels which, if the view does not leave you breathless, then the steps just might!

The surrounding elegance of Stourhead House and its Terrace Walk finds you meandering through the famously created landscape and lakes of Henry Hoare II now cared for by The National Trust. The Stourhead Estates have a regular and very popular program of events every year that caters for a vast range of interests. The current program can be viewed by visiting the official Stourhead web site at:

With so much to do in the locality, your time at "Potterings" is best used simply unwinding, relaxing and enjoying this beautiful hidden part of the Wiltshire countryside.
